Their album, First Take, had cult success in the UK and they became known to some rather important fans across the pond as a result. The Brothers, who hailed from Columbus Ohio, started recording in the late 70s. The song was mixed by soul artists, The Valentine Brothers, who originally recorded Money's Too Tight To Mention which would become far more famous as done by Simply Red. And if the British press had been somewhat unfair to Wellie, Talbot and Co previously, they would become even more so (one could say almost merciless) with the advent of this single and the Style Council's Orange period. Speaking of those newspapers, an ominous sign would occur when the Style Council got their last NME cover the day after It Didn't Matter was released. While rap music was actively promoted by the weekly British music newspapers, classic soul shouters like Marvin Gaye, Aretha Franklin, James Brown were still venerated, yet more modern US acts like Luther Vandross, Freddie Jackson and Alexander O'Neal received extremely scant notice. Quite a few UK journalists trounced the new tune. In essence, Wellie and Talbot not only sought to mimic Night after Night but one could hear the influence of Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis on the new tune as well. It was obvious that the Style Council were emulating New American Soul from the two tracks performed.

As a matter of fact, TSC mellows out the Sea composition considerably and does a far less effective reading of the song as a result.
